Proposed new Hunter Valley Dam

Hello all,

In relation to the Premier's "Dam" Plan for the Hunter Region, it is
also important to consider the additional associated infrastructure work
which will be necessary in order to deliver water to the thousands the
NSW Government intends to stuff into the region in the coming years.
Already there has been major swathes cut through bushland/native
vegetation in the area in the course of pipeline construction between
water sources and the Central Coast. Note that in spite of threatened
species impacts this pipeline construction has been done without any
ecological assessment and without any public consultation. A sign of the
(ignorant) old days in government (non)planning and assessment, and of
things to come I'm afraid.

Listers,

Big dams are a dreadful ecological nightmare. They flood a lot of good
land,
which then rots anerobically and produces tonnes of methane. They're
generally very deep, and so are cold in the middle, so animals don't
like it
much. And then of course they reduce flow rates down stream, which could
dry
out some wetlands or make an island part of the shore again, thus
removing a
predatory barrier. There seems to be this political grand gesture agenda
going around at the moment where the government tries to woo us with
gifts.
Parramatta City Council's interest free water tank arrangement isn't
quite
as glamorous as an enormous engineering marvel.
