Listers,

Big dams are a dreadful ecological nightmare. They flood a lot of good land,
which then rots anerobically and produces tonnes of methane. They're
generally very deep, and so are cold in the middle, so animals don't like it
much. And then of course they reduce flow rates down stream, which could dry
out some wetlands or make an island part of the shore again, thus removing a
predatory barrier. There seems to be this political grand gesture agenda
going around at the moment where the government tries to woo us with gifts.
Parramatta City Council's interest free water tank arrangement isn't quite
as glamorous as an enormous engineering marvel.

Hi all,

Maybe I'm a bit behind the times, but had anyone else heard about this
proposed "mega dam" in the Hunter Valley? I can't imagine it's a good
idea,
sounds similarly desparate and political as the Mary River Dam here in
QLD.
What is everyone else's thoughts on the effect on habitat for birds?
