Took one to the Ag. Research Station at Orange and it is identified as
Anoplognathus montanus. They do make a loud chirping sound.

Could we have a confusion with the green or yellow Greengrocer Cicada?
It has been claimed as the world's loudest insect, with deafening
Screech in summer.
I'm no entomologist, but I cannot say I have ever heard anything from
Any Christmas Beetle, either the yellowish species or the shiny green
One, apart from a bit of a low buzz from wings in clumsy flight.
In Brisbane there is a large black Cicada which calls intermittently -
A low buzzing 'Beeep-beep' while flying - always sounds as if its engine
Has cut out when it stops.
Anthea Fleming
In Melbourne, where we have not yet had any Cicadas calling yet, despite
Some hot days.
