On Sunday a friend and I visited the Jacana wetland, (Glenroy, Melbourne,
Vic). A (re?-)created wetland on Moonee Ponds Creek, south of the
Metropolitan Ring Road
saw - grey Fantail, Flame Robin, Hardhead, Dusky Moorhen, E Coot, Purple
Moorhen, Pied Cormorant, Great Egret, songlark/pipit
wonderfull views, at close range, of a Bronze Cuckoo cleaning and eating a
large 'caterpillar' probably one of the MANY LARGE saw-fly larvae, no
wonder there are so many cuckoos hanging about the wetland masses of sawfly
larvae in most Eucs.
Several calling ?Fantail Cuckoos
Aust Kestrel, B S Kite, Cisticolas, pairs of A Grebe, Black Duck, Willy
Wagtails, ?reedwarblers, galah, group yellow/or buff rump thornbill
LOTS of common froglet calling
and lots of grass caterpillars probably Anthela denticulata see
http://www.usyd.edu.au/macleay/larvae/anth/dentic.html
for more info.
