On Sunday a friend and I visited the Jacana wetland, (Glenroy, Melbourne, Vic). A (re?-)created wetland on Moonee Ponds Creek, south of the Metropolitan Ring Road saw - grey Fantail, Flame Robin, Hardhead, Dusky Moorhen, E Coot, Purple Moorhen, Pied Cormorant, Great Egret, songlark/pipit wonderfull views, at close range, of a Bronze Cuckoo cleaning and eating a large 'caterpillar' probably one of the MANY LARGE saw-fly larvae, no wonder there are so many cuckoos hanging about the wetland masses of sawfly larvae in most Eucs. Several calling ?Fantail Cuckoos Aust Kestrel, B S Kite, Cisticolas, pairs of A Grebe, Black Duck, Willy Wagtails, ?reedwarblers, galah, group yellow/or buff rump thornbill LOTS of common froglet calling and lots of grass caterpillars probably Anthela denticulata see http://www.usyd.edu.au/macleay/larvae/anth/dentic.html for more info.
