Unless I'm much mistaken, that's an immature Dusky Moorhen.

Took this photos in Ocean Grove 2 weekends ago at the lake off lake
avenue (sorry I forget the name but its in the township) and I cant work
out if its a little grebe or something else.

I have been searching my guide for an hour but cant get any certainty.
It may well not even be a grebe but thats the closest I can assertain by
general shape and it has the red eye of a little grebe.
