Tim,
had a look at the streamertail at http://fohn.net/hummingbird-
pictures/red-billed-streamertail.html and the bill is rather short
and straighter than in in Whiteley's image, but I certainly can see
the similarity in the tail depicted with Air Jamaica's logo. I guess
we have to remember that Whitely was an artist rather than an
illustrator, and certainly had a different view of the world and I
imagine his Hummingbird image grew from a number species.
I have been regularly entertained by Spiderhunters in the gardens in
Singapore and throughout Malaysia. They and the Sunbirds are
delightful creatures to observe, I have great memories of a stay in
Frasers Hill, Malaysia of a Streaked Spiderhunter flying through the
front door of the Bungalow and working its way through the foyer and
lounge room, gleaning insects from the cornices of the room. Once it
had cleaned up the place to it satisfaction, zipped off through a
window.
