It is certainly good that an increasing number of Aussie birders are using databases to record their sightings - whether private or public, web based or PC based, free or subscription.

However, it concerns me that there are so many systems available - BA'a Atlas, Birdpedia, OZBirds, Eremaea that I know of online, and a number of commercial packages on PCs as well as people's own software.

In the interests of the Aussie birding community - and particularly for long term research and monitoring - it seems to me that the data is far too scattered, and that it is currently too hard to get a comprehensive picture of bird observations.

Whilst I appreciate that all systems have their pros and cons, I feel it would be of great benefit if the providers of the various online databases could come up with some technique for sharing data, so that people do not have to subscribe to multiple services in order to know what is being seen

OK - this is my last plug for OzBirds - honest :)

I've been working on www.OzBirds.com on and off for a few years and use
it to record all of my sightings and photos, so it is a register of my
life list. Anyone can register and use it to record sightings. You can
search for sightings/birds/photos in a date range, for a particular
state, shire or location and almost any other search criteria you can
think of.

It doesn't currently email members of new sightings, but at some stage I
will add the facility to be able to select the criteria you want to be
notified about eg. sightings in Victoria.

Anyway, if you want to give it a go just click on the register button.
I've also created a guest account if you just want to have a play. The
username is "guest", and the password is "birding". Any feedback will be
appreciated.

Cheers
