John,

The answer to your question is a qualified yes, you can get excellent pictures with a lower end digital SLR and a 400mm lens. The qualification is that when using long local length lenses you must be meticulous with your technique. I am still working on it myself but I have seen many examples of other photographers producing sharp prize winning A3 prints with, for example, a 6MP Canon 300D.

The entry end Canon 350D and equivalents from Nikon etc have all that it takes to give excellent photos. The more expensive cameras in their range have features that give better durability and reliability. For example, shutter life ratings e.g. 50000 for the 350D and 100000 for the 20D. A polycarbonate body versus a magnesium alloy body etc

My retirement extravagance was to buy a Canon 350D and a 100 - 400 IS lens. I have produced some nice images but on the whole they are not as sharp as those made with my old Nikon 4500 4MP point and shooter. This is mainly due to using much longer focal lengths. The image stabilisation in the lens helps but is not a subsitiute for sa steady hand.
