Don't place too much emphasis on plumage - it is an unreliable aspect
of bird identification.

Publications such as HANZAB present average plumages. In reality,
plumages can vary considerably - over time and between individuals of
the same age.

The ambient light affects how the plumage appears and then the
photographic process can further alter appearances.

Regards, Laurie.

MY last word on the Mike Simpson bird on the wire ID. How can it be a recently out of the nest or juv Jacky Winter with a white throat and chin, HANZAB says feathers of chin and throat dark brown with white
bases giving a mottled appearance The photo in the Photographic Index
Series depicts exactly such plumage, whereas Mikes photo shows
extensive white throat and chin ,I rest my case.
