I found the Yellow-eyed penguin tour on the Otago Peninsula (Sth Island, NZ) fantastic. You tour the colony site through specially built camouflaged tunnels with unobtrusive viewing of them around their nestboxes. They also have a trench out to the beach so you can watch the penguins surfing in, and on our occasion, virtually tip-toeing past snoozing seals laid out on the beach.

And, just down the road from there is the only mainland breeding colony of albatross - The Royal Albatross Colony at Tairaroa Head.

The whole of the Otago Peninsula was the highlight of a two week family tour of the South Island. Loved it. Seals, penguins and birds all over the place!

Cheers,
Karen.
