I am the editor of the Hunter Region bird reports. As it happens, I
delivered the 12th edition (covering sightings for 2004) to the
printers
yesterday. The total species list for the Hunter Region at the
end of
2004 is 412 (and incidentally, 339 of those species were recorded in
2004). The list does include all sightings of pelagic birds, which
perhaps is where the differences of opinion are coming from.
There are
quite a number of pelagic species included in the list. But lots of
land birds too.
The boundaries of the Hunter Region match those used by NSW Tourism,
and
similar agencies. So it spans a largish area including all the way up
to
Crowdy Bay NP and inland to Cassilis in the west plus parts of
Wollemi
NP in the SW. And the oceans alongside us too.

There may be some conjecture on the exact number, as there are
unconfirmed
reports and escapees reported from year to year. However, even
including
those 'accidental' sightings reveal substantially less than 400.

According to my calculations from the Hunter Bird Observers Club
annual reports there are over 400 species in the Hunter region. I
have seen 357 and I know of at least one person who has reliably
seen
over 360.
