Like all Nature Reserves in NSW, Yathong is a public reserve, mainly
established for reasearch and education (unlike National Parks which also
provide facilities for public recreation). Visiting Nature reserves is
possible, but you should always contact the local NPWS office to get
permission and also potential areas for contact (in this case Cobar ooffice
on 02 6836 2692). Most times the only prerequisite is the supply of bird
list for the Atlas of NSW Wildlife (the NPWS database of fauna sightings).
They should also be able to give you details of where things can be found
(like the location of the Malleefowl enclosures which is the site where
Striated Grasswrens used to be found).
However places like Yathong have had research (sucha s the Malleefowl work),
so access may not be allowed to all areas. Talk to NPWS and see what they
say.

Edwin, you may want to be a little careful at Yathong. NPWS seem to give
the impression that they don't want people here. Not sure if it was the
abrupt email from the local ranger, or the signs on every cross road saying
'Service track only - no unauthorised entry" but it seems public entry is
not what NPWS want for this spot.
