Whilst loathe to further extend this interminable thread on bird names , birding-ausers might get a giggle out of this. In preparation for a trip to outback Qld. I've received a copy of Queensland's Outback Travellers Guide , a glossy publication of the Outback Quensland Tourism Authority Inc.
Bird Watching actually gets a three paragraph section, along with Fishing, Dinosaurs & Fossils, Opal Fossicking, and Four wheel Driving (see what company we're in).
Not content with the existing bird names we have , the erstwhile Authority includes (? creates) the following species in its list of Outback Queenslands birds:
 " pheasants, grebas,cracks,cotta,old world cuckoos,frog mouths,typical swifts,"
They do advise tourists to purchase a "bird watcher's guide book" where no doubt they can spend many happy hours searching the index for cracks and cottas.
