Michael wrote "So please check with Birds Australia or BOCA, perhaps through their local
branches, before letting ANYONE know about rare birds, particularly if they
seem likely to be breeding.

This harks back to what I wrote only moments ago.  The problem with Michael's approach is that by the time you contact BOCA or BA a week or more has transpired and those that should be aware of the record are already behind the eight ball.

Why is BOCA or BA the primary body for such records?  What are the chance's that your local BOCA or BA person is aware of who to contact regards one of the lower profile threatened species?  I think you will find it is the state fauna agencies that are doing the bulk of the conservation work on threatened species.  If you aren't sure who to contact you could certainly try the Threatened Bird Network at BA in Melbourne (Chris Tzaros) or the Threatened Species Network coordinator (WWF) in your state.

It really is important that sightings be reported ASAP.  To often we are frustrated by delays in reports of threatened species.   It can't be stressed enough that the sooner the sighting is reported, the more information about habitat, habitat use etc etc can be gained from these opportunistic records.
