I'm not going to get into a to-and-fro slinging match over this.

Instead I'd like to suggest that there is a difference between the original "The draft Regulation and other documents will not deliver on the Governments promise to end broadscale landclearing" and my response "The new system is not a perfect one but I think it will deliver an end to broadscale land clearing in NSW."

We seem to be in total agreement that landclearing is a major concern for our birds.  I just happen to think that what is being proposed will result in a bureaucracy that will see broadscale landclearing come to an end in NSW.  This is because the hoops that farmers will be required to jump through will almost certainly result in very few applications to clear.  Those that are put up will find it hard to get through as they will be hard pressed to find suitable offsets to compensate for the proposal.  This is not an ideal situation, a bureaucratic one rarely is, but I think (and I'm only offering my opinion here) that it will have the desired affect.  I also think that as the system is implemented there will be a realisation that it is not an ideal solution and it will be modified.  These modifications will probably make it easier to clear in the future.  That we should be concerned about.

Cheers

David Geering
