Hi
 I kept ferrets for years as a kid 50 years ago and did loose a few down
rabbit burrows, so did my mates, but I have never seen a wild ferret in
Aus. or heard of them but I saw stoats in NZ in 1965 though but not
polecats (ferrets). So if they have not become established after all
these years there is probably a natural reason, may be foxes.
Cheers  Chris

There was a news item last night on Channel 10 regarding a Petition by
Ferret Lovers being tabled in Parliament. There must be some way
the birding community can stop Ferrets being kept as pets in
Queensland.   They have destroyed a lot of bird life in New Zealand;
in fact they are worse than cats. I was talking to an ex-NZ parks
officer today who told me that Fiordland continues to be badly
affected by ferrets and weasel; the Parks service is trying to find a
biological method to reduce these pest species. It is to be hoped
that Parliament does not give in to the Ferret Lovers and permit them
to keep their pets in Qld. Perhaps the birding community can lodge
a petition banning the keeping of ferrets in Qld.
