From Desley Williams in Mackay
There was a news item last night on Channel 10 regarding a Petition by Ferret Lovers being tabled in Parliament. There must be some way the birding community can stop Ferrets being kept as pets in Queensland. They have destroyed a lot of bird life in New Zealand; in fact they are worse than cats. I was talking to an ex-NZ parks officer today who told me that Fiordland continues to be badly affected by ferrets and weasel; the Parks service is trying to find a biological method to reduce these pest species. It is to be hoped that Parliament does not give in to the Ferret Lovers and permit them to keep their pets in Qld. Perhaps the birding community can lodge a petition banning the keeping of ferrets in Qld.
