Ferrets are apparently kept elsewhere in Australia (except the NT)
so the cat seems to be out of the bag.
Having seem them in NSW pet stores and heard they were used for rabbit
hunting I was surprised there weren't feral populations. One suggestion
is they are somewhat dietary specialists which reduces the chances of
wild populations being established - unlike foxes for example which are
definitely dietary generalists.
This is not say they won't establish feral populations and become a
problem, but Tasmania or Victoria seems a much more likely venue than
Queensland
