I also put out bird seed, a small cupful about three times a week (in
Gembrook, Vic). King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas, SC Cockatoos, Pied
Currawongs and Common Bronzewing are the common visitors, Eastern Rosella
occasionally. SB Fairy Wrens and Red-browed Firetails come in to pick up the
scraps. I have also seen White-headed Pigeon once and Spotted Turtle Doves a
couple of times. I go away for about five months every year during winter
and the birds are back within a day of our return. I'm on first name terms
with one of the King Parrots so know it is the same bird year after year,
they seem to exist very well when I'm not here.
The Lyrebird has taken to talking to himself in the glass by the front door
each morning. There is a bowl by the door that is normally full of water, he
perches on the side of the bowl and splashes water all over the place, the
door mat was covered with his large white droppings when we returned. The
doorway is sheltered from rain and wind so I guess he finds it cosy. Poor
fellow looks like a brown chicken now as his tail feathers have beeen
moulted but are sprouting quite strongly. He always seem to keep himself
well hidden whist 'tailless' as though he is ashamed to be seen without his
lovely plumage.
