After looking at Mat's pictures, his mystery bird certainly looks like a
strong candidate for a Stilt Sandpiper and reminds me of the one I saw
early this year at Stockton, Newcastle!. Looking at a number of photos,
I have seen that the bill of a Stilt Sandpiper can be variable in length
and shape as well as well as the leg colour. This bird is certainly
worth pursuing !!!

Hello again,

Last Sunday (October 10) at 4pm, we believe we saw a Stilt Sandpiper on
the mudflats at the Cairns Esplanade.
We were up towards the northern end of the Esplanade, about 100m south
of the Acacia Court Hotel.
It was wading near edge of the water on the rising tide, and kept to
itself.

We have photographs of the bird.

Sorry for the delay in posting our sighting.
On the day we did alert a group of scope-wielding birders (who were
further down the esplanade) to an "unusual wader", but they didn't seem
that interested in following it up.

This email is to let Cairns birders know to keep an eye open for it.

Cheers
Cathy and Mat Gilfedder
