Hi Birding-aussers, took Martin Wells from Yorkshire down to Sherwood Arboretum this morning to look primarily for Little Bittern & crakes. Sherwood Arboretum is a riverside wetland/parkland oasis just 6.5 kilometres SW of the Brisbane CBD.

Martin particularly wanted to see Baillon's Crake which is often to be seen here in some numbers, he dipped. He was concentrating on the spot where I often find Little Bittern when up one popped under his nose flying from one lilypad clump to another & he missed it! However all was not lost as there was plenty of other stuff on hand, he was most impressed with closeup views of his first Channel-billed Cuckoo feeding on figs, he hadn't realised just how big they are.

Little Lorikeets were by far the most numerous species there & I had a park tick - a pair of Eastern Whipbirds - in riverine thicket down by the Brisbane River. The real find of the morning however was the presence of at least 3 possibly 4 full plumaged male White-winged Trillers, all in full song for the duration of our stay. The last time I saw one in this location was in the winter of 1991. I've also had them breeding in the late ' 90s at Bald Hills north Brisbane. It must be getting pretty dry in the mid west that plus overdone land clearing.

We spent 3 hours there, toting up 53 species, many of them new for Martin. Some of the local birders who haven't seen the triller in SEQ might want to get there and see them, they're not easy to miss and are located on the three islands within the two lagoons. I was expecting to show Martin Varied Triller, which I have seen there but will have to wait for the another time & place. Full species list below;
