Rachel,
The Bird Observers Club of Australia web site has some useful
information on plants for birds.

1. Bird Observers Club - planting for birds -
http://www.birdobservers.org.au/planting_for_birds.htm

There are plenty of other sites on the web offering additional advice as
well. Some examples follow

2. Attracting wildlife to the garden -
http://www.anbg.gov.au/bibliography/wildlife.html

3. Flora for fauna (Information sheets) -
http://www.floraforfauna.com.au/garden_ideas/howto.asp

You really need to go to a local (native/indigenous) nursery to find out
what LOCAL plants you could put in. I believe Eltham Council has a good
nursery.

cheers, Martin
