A few brief words in defence of HANZAB - it would have been difficult for the author of the White-faced Heron text in HANZAB to consult the Handbook of the Birds of the World, which was published two years later!

I'll second that - and my involvement with HANZAB has been limited to proof reading some of the owl and nightjat text in one volume!

One of the great functions of HANZAB is to summarise the knowledge as it existed at the time of publication. When an observer sees something of interest, a quick check in HANZAB will give a good indication as to whether this is new knowledge or not. If not, do some more research, and PUBLISH! That's how this kind of information is accumulated in the first place!!!
