We have just returned from a 10 day trip through the far North-West of NSW
and North-East of South Australia. I have to strongly endorse the comments
of Dion Hobcroft, who, two weeks ago, reported how this area has come alive
since recent rains. When we were here one year ago, there had been no rain
for two years and it was quite depressing. Taking photographs now of rows
of multi-coloured wildflowers along the fence at Cameron Corner was

Birds were excellent also, with Budgerigars, Zebra Finches, Crimson Chats in
relative abundance.

Highlights of the trip, on top of the above, were:

Black-breasted Buzzard, Spotted Harrier (soaring just 10 metres right
overhead to show magnificent markings), Bourkes Parrot, Australian
Pratincole, Diamond Dove, Black-eared Cuckoo, Chirruping Wedgebill, Cinnamon
Quail-thrush and nest sitting Ground Cuckoo-Shrike all in Sturt NP and
across to the Strezlecki Track at Merty-Merty.

Brown Falcon pair feeding young in a nest over our campsite West of Cameron

White-browed Treecreeper on the banks of the Cooper Creek at Innamincka
(races were on that day, so we did not stay!)

Letter-winged Kite (single bird) 25kms south of Strezlecki Crossing

Chestnut-breasted Whiteface at the T&T site NE of Lyndhurst

Elegant Parrots in Parachilna Gorge in Flinders Ranges

Rufous Fieldwren at Port Augusta Arid Gardens

Chestnut-crowned Babblers at three nearby spots near Swan Reach

127 species for the trip, including 3 "lifers"

A great time to visit this area!
