My observations agree that as a general rule, Crested Pigeons have a
preference for large areas of mown grass while Spotted Turtle-Doves
prefer the cover of longer, unmown grasses, garden beds or similar. I
am talking of Sydney urban areas. Preferences away from here may be
different

Following up David's comments below I think Crested Pigeons will
have no effect on Spotted Turtle-doves. Around my place in Como
(southern Sydney) Turtle-doves and Crested Pigeons coexist quite
happily, with both visiting my very urban garden (with the latter
more common). Turtle-doves seem to be more common in the remnant
(usually weedy) gullies, with Crested Pigs more often on open areas
like ovals and lawns.
Cheers,
Peter

We are fortunate in that we don't have Spotted Doves in Dubbo but, from my
time in coastal NSW where Crested Pigeons have colonised they do not seem
to compete directly with Spotted Doves. Crested Pigeons don't appear to
become a real urban bird like Spotted Doves although HANZAB does comment
that they are common in urban areas. This may still be real differences
