I took my younger son on a brief camping expedition last week to
Kanangra Walls NP (30kms south of Jenola Caves, NSW). The main purpose,
to look for interesting reptiles for him, was completely frustrated by
the cold wet weather, but we did see a couple of good birds. A Spotted
Quail-thrush crossed the road in front of us, only a few hundred metres
south of the Oberon turn-off. And there was a small party of Southern
Emu-wrens in the scrub just a few metres down the path from the car-park
at Kanangra Walls itself. Quite far west for this last species, I would
have thought, and at about 1100 metres altitude.
