freak bird

I have been lucky enough to see a Steller's Sea-Eagle (that is the correct name) in southern Japan (where they are rare). They are an impressive bird with a massive bill but the wing span is about 8 feet ( 2 1/2 meters which is about the same as a Wedge-tailed Eagle. The largest wingspan of an extant bird is the Wandering Albatross, of course, which can go to 3 1/2 meters which is nearly 12 feet.

there's a piece on CNN.com about a supposed Stellar Eagle sighting in Alaska. Witnesses claim the wing span was >14 ft.

 

I also saw a DISCOVERY piece regarding such a sighting in Canada by a former green-beret.

 

do you anything of this? can you perhaps explain?
