Hi Mike and other White-throated Needletail followers

These are my records of WTNTs seen over wet forests in Toolangi State
Forest (approx 60 to 70 km NE of Melbourne) for Feb and Mar 2002 that I
haven't yet reported.
All times are daylight saving times for Victoria.

24 Feb
approx 20 WTNTs at 11.10am
37 28 37 S
145 33 28 E
mild, no wind, no cloud

4 March
5 or 6 WTNTs seen periodically between 11.00am and 1.00pm.
37 30 44 S
145 30 52 E

8 March

14 March
3 birds flying very high at 11.25am
37 31 05 S
145 52 39 E
cool, light wind, 80% thin could cover

22 March
at least 30 birds, possibly many more, some flying very high and hard to
see, others so low I could hear their wings
1.00 to 1.15pm
37 34 41 S
145 33 47 E
warm, light wind, 2% cloud cover

24 March
5 birds at 1.10pm to 10 birds at 1.25pm
37 29 56 S
145 34 15 E
mild to warm, calm with occasional light to moderate wind, no cloud

On 5 March, I spoke to the man from the fire tower in the O'Shannassy
water catchment area (about 75 km ENE of Melbourne). He said he has
seen less WTNTs this year compared with last year. There have been up to
30 every 3 to 5 days flying around the tower eating native wasps and
bees and butterflies and coming very close to his vantage point.
However, he hadn't seen any for about two weeks when I spoke to him. He
has videoed the WTNTs and is very interested in them.

Cheers,
Merrilyn
