For all those, including myself, heading to
Singapore in the next few weeks here's a tid-bit I turned up while searching
through material on birds in Singapore:
"Most mornings songbird enthusiasts gether at
the corner of Tiong Bahru and Eng Poh Rds to drink coffee and listen to their
birds give voice. Each bird is housed in a lacquered bamboo cage, delicately
ornamented and decorated with blue and white feeding bowls and other little
trinkets. The cages are suspended from numbered hooks under cover nea the loal
coffee shop ... Each type of bird has it's own area .... The first enthusiasts
come at around 7am, and the gathering dispands around 11am when the sun starts
getting too hot. Most tourists come here on Sunday morning as you are likely to
see more birds then (many birds have the day off work). To get here take the MRT
to Tiong Bahru station, then walk 500m east." (Lonely Planet Guide to Singapore,
2000).
Not your usual bird-watching, but it may be
interesting to see anothers culture and their relationship with birds.
