I don't think an apology is at all required.  Yes, you saw the bird and thought it was a male.  It actually turned out to be a young female.  So what?  Not everyone can be expected to be fully conversant with the aging and sexing of every bird they see.  Based on the resources you had on hand you made the best call you could.  

I don't think I have actually seen any reference on birding-aus chastising you for the error, just some debate about the manner in which this species can be sexed.

Continue to enjoy your birding and if you want to learn more about what you are seeing then by all means expand your horizons.  If not that's fine too.
