I guess I should publicly answer Michael's message of yesterday.  Last
night I replied to him privately.  Apologies if people were misled by my
posting of 25th October.

You  will understand that, when I first saw the PS on the 25th I was
enormously excited.  This was a new bird for me & I had only Pizzey with
me.  I was also alone.  Looking at the book, it didn't appear at all
like the female pictured - so I assumed it was a male!  I was wrong of
course.  The experts then flocked to Banyule & now many, many excellent
birders have since seen & confirmed that it is an immature FEMALE
Painted Snipe.
