On the subject of "birding game[s] to play in the quiet winter months",
I can thoroughly recommend The Virtual Birder (www.virtualbirder.com)
birding "tours".  These are virtual birding adventures in various parts 
of the USA.  Having a USA field guide is an advantage, but not essential.
I discovered these several years ago and found them to be a lot of fun.

The current active tours are south west Florida (waders), and Eastern USA
(raptors.)  The direct link to the "OnLocation" tours page is:
