Subject: Woodland bird community now listed (Vic.)
Some bird conservation news from Victoria.
Following the Victorian Scientific Advisory Committee's (SAC) recommendation
(December 2000), the Minister for Environment and Conservation has added the
'Victorian temperate-woodland bird community' to the list of threatened
communities in the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act on 12 April 2001.
I believe this is the first time an entire community of birds has been
recognised as threatened in Australia. The conservation of the community will
eventually be addressed by an 'Action Statement' (management plan) to be
produced by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
For those interested, a short recommendation report by the SAC was published
late last year. Anyone interested in a copy, please contact me directly and
provide a snail mail address for posting.
