Lloyd-

If I were an agriculturalist, I would be very comforted to have AQIS
"watching" to make sure we don't end up with Monk Parakeets or Queleas
arriving and wreaking havoc on crops. Since I am but a humble ecologist, I
will simply be grateful for the environmental harm they are trying to
prevent with their surveillance. If a House Crow turns up, I will be the
first bird watcher to ring them and tell them where it is.

Its time some of the members of this list woke up, and informed themselves
about the enormous problems caused round the world by invasive organisms
moved hither and thither by humans. It is a far better thing for one House
Crow, Magpie, or whatever to be killed at the outset than loose untold
wildlife, and end up having to kill thousands of a newly established ferals.
You want to prevent animal suffering? Get real, and give AQIS the
assistance they need and that our wildlife deserves.

A message relayed from the Mackay birders is that the Black-billed Magpie
has now
been destroyed at the instigation of AQIS (Australian Quarantine Inspection
Service)
beacuse of the possibility of introducing disease.

Further inquiries seem to indicate that AQIS will be monitoring
birding-aus - even
if not officially - for information when ship assisted birds turn up!

Big brother is watching us all!
