I should keep off this one, as I have no experience of Bustard-watching, but
when some messages indicate surprise at the Atlas results showing a decline,
I can't resist.

I guess everyone is familiar with the saying "lies, damned lies, and
statistics". The German Forestry Service (where I encountered it) and
possibly the wider German community, has another saying which, if my memory
from an International Union of Forestry Organisations conference in '67 is
correct, goes something like -

   Luge, Maneid, und Tier-erzahlen

(Someone with a knowledge of the language, please correct me. I know that
at least there should be an umlaut over the 'u' of 'luge' - but I don't know
how to get one in this email.)

Which I was given to understand translates as "Lies, blasphemy, and
animal-counting".

'nuff said!

Cheers
