Gooday Bill and birding-ausers
Last Saturday November 4, 2000 Pastor Bill Blundell from the Bowen Seventh
Day Adventist Church gave me a dead bird that he had located in the grounds
of the church. Seems that the bird had only recently died as there was no
stiffness in the body what-so ever, possible victim of a collision with a
window?
The bird was a male Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher judging by the length
of the pure white tail streamers.
On the 31 Oct reports appeared on birding-aus about the arrival of this
species in the Cairns NQ region.
No doubt this bird may have been passing through the dry tropics on its way
to the Mackay hinterland.
A previous sighting of this species occurred at Bowen late last year on the
18 November 1999 when a BbPK was located in Ann Donnan's garden at Queens
Beach, Bowen. This bird eventually died and seemed to be the victim of a
storm the previous night.
To hold this species in your hand and admire the glorious colours and the
delicate tail was a thrill, how much more enjoyable it would have been if I
could have released it to continue its journey South.
I will be passing the dead specimen onto the North Qld. Museum in Townsville
as it would make an excellent skin for display.
