However the highlight was two Tawny Frogmouths, one below eye-level the
other a little higher, close alongside the track. Nothing unusual in this,
they are relatively common here though not often seen. However one was a
red-phase bird in a richly, coloured plumage. The only other 'red' birds that
I know of locally are the ones in Cremorne. How common is this phase in
Sydney? Where is it common? Any takers out there even if you have to say that
no, you haven't seen them often?

It took some finding but I knew I had records of red phase T/F's in the
Sydney area, I first saw 2 T/F,s beside a track which leads upstream from
Roseville bridge on the south side of Middle Harbour Creek on 5-4-1988. Middle
Harbour Creek flows into Sydney Harbour about 20K. north and slightly west of
Sydney C.B.D. The track is named after some person but I can't remember the
name.
One of these birds was a red phase, the other a conventional [for Sydney]
grey phase. The birds were there for a period of several visits and then
disappeared.
I understand that red phase are more common in the north of
Australia.
