I haven't had a chance to examine the effects of MP3-encoding on bird
calls, but today there was an article posted on Slashdot.org about a
detailed analysis of MP3 encoders.  The tests were carried out against
a number of popular programs at different bit rates using "a series of
brutal test tones"; while not bird calls, the results are probably
still applicable.
