Good idea Anthony!

May I suggest that it would be particularly useful also to post a summary of
clear-cut errors for the benefit of birding-aussers who already have the
guide and haven't necessarily found each and every mistake, or maybe don't
have the experience to recognize them all. That certainly includes me.

I think it would be a particularly appropriate use of this forum to share
observations about published errors in other field guides too - Australian
and overseas, but particularly Australian - not necessarily as criticisms,
but for the benefit of mutual clarification.

Add the mislabeling of the Painted Snipe female as a male on page 107 of
Morecombe.

I should say that on balance, I'm a fan of Michael Morecombe's book; I very
much like the layout. The way I see it, a field guide is as much as anything
a handy reference to other peoples' experience in the field - and you can't
have too much of that. Yes, some of the plates in this first edition are a
bit off, and that can be said selectively for the other field guides too to
a greater or lesser extent.

Hi all,

Is anybody collecting information on errors in the new field guide??

I've found a couple of goodies so far:

Swift Parrot, listed as common. Should be listed as uncommon at the least,
given that it's endangered, with 2000(ish) birds left.
Powerful Owl, territory up to 1000 square km. That'd be 100,000 hectares,
just a tad more than the 1000-1200 ha in most of the literature.

There are also problems with several of the distribution maps.

If there is no particular person already collecting this stuff then I would
be happy to do so and forward it to the publishers. Email me at

Cheers
Anthony
