Gooday all,
One of the best places for birding are the "Stock routes". These were used in the past to get the cattle to the meatworks etc and actually have watering points at set distances along the route. Stock routes retain much of the original vegetation of an area with some intrusion by exotic weeds. Your local council is the best place to access information on the location of these routes in your particular area. Not much good for a visiting birdo but very good information to gather about your locality.
Jon Wren.
