My highlights are usually the birds I've just seen. A few do stand out in
retrospect though. These include:

Having a Sooty Owl visit my place in January. For ten years or so I'd
dreamt of finding a Sooty Owl in some deep inaccessible gully in the Blue
Mountains, but I never expected to hear one from inside my lounge room!
(Me, not the bird.) Then to have it reconfirmed two nights later when it
called right on cue as we were talking about it.

My best ever views of a male Superb Lyrebird displaying, for about an hour
in June.

Hundreds of Orange Chats on an incredibly lush green lakebed at Fort Grey,
Sturt NP. The brilliance of the males with the sun shining on them.

Noccundra in south-west Queensland. Two Brolgas dancing on the road in
front of the hotel at sunrise, with only me to see them.

Every time I see a woodswallow or get a close view of a Beautiful Firetail,
both of which happened many times this year.

Birdwatching with my groups from the Katoomba Day & Evening College. The
obvious delight of someone when they first get a new or favourite bird
clearly in their binoculars.

I would like to echo what others have said about Birding-aus and what a
great facility it is. On New Years Eve I will have been subscribed for
exactly a year and I never cease to be amazed by the capacity for exchange
of information and sentiments. Thanks to Russell and everyone on the list.

Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone.

Cheers,
Carol
