Thanks, Margaret and others who provided some helpful ideas.
Berating Tony and I for not being thick-skinned enough is,
in my case at least, more likely to be counter-productive than anything
else. I asked for help, not condemnation.
I'm actually reasonably good at "begging" when I know the cause is a
popular one with my community (St John Volunteers, Wildlife Welfare etc)
but in all cases where I get out into the pub and do my bit, its always
a raffle, so I can offer at least the hope of something to gratify
people's self-interest. I'm afraid I'm not, and never will be, any good
at being an evangelist for a good cause - perhaps because I was
over-exposed as a kid to the ones who arrived on my doorstep in pairs,
wearing suits!
