The other day at the Botanic Gardens I saw a young Rufous Owl
roosting in what I thought was a rather strange way. At first I
thought it was dead since it appeared to be hanging by its neck in
the fork of a tree. It was holding its weight on its chin, with its body
and wings drooping below the level of the fork. Its claws were
tucked in under its chin but didn't seem in a suitable position to
take the weight of the body. The adult birds were nearby, so I
guess it had permission to hang around like that, but it was
certainly rather startling to see.
