It's been action stations on the turkey mound outside our back fence
over the last week or so. Around 6 to 6.30 every third or fourth
morning, there is a female frenetically digging an opening in the mound,
with the grand old man in close attendence - delivering admonitory pecks
every 10-15 seconds. The female fluffs her tail up and holds a wing out
to fend of the male, and sends the mound matter flying in all directions
as she apparently works at random getting down to the combustion
chamber. By 7 am the male has generally finished filling in the hole.
This morning, there were three turkeys on the mound - I'm not sure what
the third turkey was there for - it was doing a bit of scratching around
but with less apparent intent. Still it divided the male's attention.
Does anyone know the time lag for turkeys between mating and egg laying?
