Niels,
You obviously have some valid arguments but I do note that you seem to
travel overseas extensively. While I personally have no argument with you,
many people would also point out that planes also blow a lot of smoke! Very
few people from developing countries can afford the luxury of flying in a
jumbo jet. My point is that we are all (in developed countries including
Europe) guilty of conspicuous consumption. I believe your Australian list
is well over 600; how did you travel around? The problem you rightly pose 
is just possibly a bit more complicated than your rather simplistic
solutions would suggest.
For the record I also own a 4wd - it is a 1.6L Toyota (can't get much
smaller than that...) & I am certainly not endorsing Tony's comments either
;-)
