John,

While I am not from Stateside, one US equivalent to Wingspan that I
subscibe to and think is really good is Birding produced by the American
Birding Association.  It has good articles on the things you outlined.  The
ABA started as a "twitchers"-type organisation, but has evolved into an
excellent bird/consevation/education body.
