Job Opening
857 - Mojave National Park, CA
Sponsor: National Park Service
Program: ECO/NPS
Description:
The Mojave National Preserve does not have any baseline information on
the impacts from aircraft overflights. "Natural quiet" is a resource of
concern for this park as aircraft noise impacts wilderness values and
may impact wildlife. A new airport is proposed just 17 miles from the
park boundary. We need to install sound monitors to determine existing
conditions. Under this project, monitors will be installed, data will
be stored, and the information will be analyzed. The ECO student will
learn about sound monitoring equipment, data, storage, and how to
interpret data.
The Mojave National Preserve is a fairly new unit of the National Park
Service (1994). It covers 1.6 million acres of Mojave Desert and
includes many mountain ranges and dry lake valleys. The resource
management team is growing and presently contains 3 geologists, a
hydrologist, a Hazardous Materials Specialist, two biologists, and temps
in reclamation, GIS, and biology. Most are in the field up to 60% of
their time. Major work is in inventorying the resources and monitoring
their conditions. Summer temperatures are between 90 degrees and 120
degrees and work is in remote areas.
