A Channel-billed cuckoo has been photographed in Berwick VIC – from Victorian Birders Facebook Group yesterday: https://www.facebook.com/groups/631709646869379/posts/6389891107717842

Apparently a regular visitor for 13 or 14 years…

Having just said that the Koels weren’t here yet, we heard our first one today. So not far behind the CBCs.

CBCs ending up further south earlier in time is also something not unusual. Reports from my extended family in SE Qld often suggest CBCs arrive later than in Sydney. While that may be due to differences in awareness of what’s happening, I always wondered whether there may have been some inland highway that the CBCs used to get further South before settling down. But maybe they just like it better down here?

We've had what we assume is the same koel in the yard the past few years, in frankston victoria. It arrived last week.

We had a pair of CBC’s come through out front of our house (on Lake Macquarie, NSW) on September 3, but have heard nothing since.

A friend about 3 kms down the road sighted his “first for the season” last Sunday (sept 12).

The Koels usually arrive here about two weeks after the CBC, however last year they didn’t arrive till mid October.

Nature is a very interesting thing……………….

Alistair,

My wife and I have a (largely friendly) competition each year to hear the first CBC (Turramurra, NSW). She asserts she heard it on Tuesday morning of this week. Over the last decade or so they have been fairly consistent arriving between 10 September and 17 September.

The Koels are often a little later. Not heard yet this year.

Regards

Andrew Ross

Just heard my first CBC for the season, in Hunters Hill NSW.

Happy spring everyone!
