Wendy
I have both the field guides that John and Mark suggested - though I have yet to use the latter in the field! It is probably the more comprehensive and is useful having the species from the same island group together (and has more subspecies illustrated which is useful - for example the Cardinal Myzomela on Santo is very different to the illustrations.
Have attached my trip report from many years ago (on my honeymoon). Haven't been to Tanna so no advice there./ Not certain if Glen still guides on Santo but he was very good - we just had very poor weather the day I went out.
Otherwise the birding is relatively easy for common species, but some species are tougher (hard to see or need to get up high).
Good ck and have fun.
Cheers,
Peter

Re  Field Guide for Vanuatu
Hi Wendy,

I used the Birds of Melanesia for trips to both New Caledonia 2 years ago and Vanuatu this year. It usefully divides the passerine section in to the different island groups. This makes the guide bigger (447 pages) due to repetition but still a useful feature. It gives detailed notes on range and habitats for island endemics . I've not seen the volume suggested by John Harris.
I didn't use a guide either. I find checking out eBird bar charts for various locations useful.

Regards

Mark Stanley

Hi Wendy,
there is a guide called The Birds of the Solomons, Vanuatu and New
Caledonia by Doughty, Day and Plant.

I have birded there but didn't have a guide.

Cheers

John

We are heading off to Vanuatu in June.  Is there a field guide that is
recommended?
Also, can anyone recommend any local guides for day trips?  We are visiting
Efate, Tanna and Espiritu Santo Islands.
