The use of unleaded petrol wouldn't explain the big difference in populations between the eastern and western suburbs of Melbourne.

As it has been noted that the introduction of unleaded petrel has coincided with the decline and furthermore it was also noted that roadside sparrows are the first to go.

Not sure how much truth there is to this but certainly high traffic areas appear to be hit hard.
